I finally jailbroke my 1.1.3 iPhone

Posted in Apps, News by Omar C. Published February 20th, 2008

ZiPhoneYes, it’s true. After reading Sammy’s post, I finally got the courage to re-jailbreak my iPhone and I couldn’t be happier. Having been on both sides of the fence I can honestly say that I’m so grateful for the hackers that figured out how to jailbreak the 1.1.3 iPhone firmware. I was miserable after updating my iPhone to 1.1.3 and losing my hacks, sure I had jiggly icons and Faux GPS, but I missed a lot of the enhancements that my hacks had given me like the ability to change the alert sounds or to have custom icons. Like Sammy, I also used ZiPhone to do the dirty work. I can’t believe how simple it was. All I did was:

  1. Download and install ZiPhone
  2. Synced my iPhone on iTunes
  3. Then I clicked Restore in iTunes (click yes for creating a Back up when asked by iTunes)
  4. After my iPhone finished restoring I resynced it again
  5. I then opend up ZiPhone, clicked on the “Jailbreak” check box and clicked on “Free your iPhone!”

That’s it, it took about 1 minute and then I was back in business.

I got the jiggly icons

If you haven’t heard, ZiPhone has been upgraded like 5 times in the past week (it seems).  ZiPhone, to track back, is an all-in-one Activate/Jailbreak/Unlock solution for ALL iPhones with any firmware.  Even you OTB 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 users can use ZiPhone to free your iPhone.

So this weekend, I decided to take the plunge and go for the 1.1.3 upgrade.  Read more for what I had and where I ended up.

February Contest

Posted in contest by Omar C. Published February 18th, 2008

I’ve been really busy this month so it slipped my mind that I never announced the newest contest. I have quite a few products left over from reviews so I think I’m going to do another “pick your 3″ prize package from the products that I’ll list at the end of this post. In order to win your choice of 3 items you’ll have to post a comment for the rest of the posts in February starting with this post. So starting with this post and for the rest of the ones to come in February, you’ll need to make a comment, and only one comment please, last month was a confusing nightmare trying to count up the comments when some people commented 2 to 3 times in one post. Here’s a list of the items that are up for grabs:

1. Incipio Sleeve
2. iQase Silicon Case
3. Tekkeon Flip Case
4. iQase Side Hip Case
5. Tekkeon Wallet Case
6. Proporta Alu-Leather Edge Case
7. Otterbox Defender Case
8. Proporta Alu-Crystal Case
There may be a few additions to this list by the end of the month depending on which items are reviewed. I’ll keep this list updated. Thanks for being a loyal visitor and start commenting.

[Update] Yes, if you’ve won past BMAi contests you can still enter to win again, if you happen to win a second time in a row, then I might as well make you a writer for the site :) . Actually, thats how Derek got here.

iChurch

Posted in News by Ryan W.. Published February 15th, 2008

Now I know since the release of the iPhone, it has been dubbed the JesusPhone. Breaking people free from their Cell phone shackled lives. But it comes to a point where people go overboard. I’m sorry but this seems to have gone a little too far. Just my opinion. A church in a small town in Texas has put up large signs with an image of an iPhone. One thing I noticed is that the phone has got to be jailbroken. Check out the icons on the phone.

What do you guys think? I know people have got to have a view on this.

USBFever Telescopic Lens

Posted in News by Ryan W.. Published February 15th, 2008

“Don’t want to be bounded by the built-in camera, now you have a way to “expand” its functions. This telescope has a 6x expansion that can help you to close up any objects from afar 6 times.” This is coming from the website of USBFever. This adapter enables users to increase their zoom range by 6. That is an impressive stat by any standards. Included with the lens is a crystal case that is smoky black, all for $20. That alone is the fair price for an iPhone case. Sounds like a deal to me. USBFever says that the lens can be used for watching a sporting event or even a concert. Just another reason for you to whip out your phone and looked at in awe. For the price and what’s included, it seems like it might be a deal. Omar C should be receiving a sample of this pretty soon so keep dropping by and looking out for that video review.

Update that Wallpaper

Posted in News by Ryan W.. Published February 14th, 2008

If any of you guys are like me, you can’t stand having the same background on anything. Your phone, computer, anything. Well take a look at interfacelift.com. Not only do they provide TONS (and I mean tons) of wallpapers, icons, and themes for Mac and Windows, but there is also a section for the iPhone. Just head over there and start your browsing. They’ve even optimized their website for the iPhone so you can view a few of their wallpapers directly on your iPhone. Change is gonna come, oh yes change is gonna come.

iPhone Tethering

Posted in News by Ryan W.. Published February 14th, 2008

Well it looks like ATT is going to let users tether their iPhones to either laptops or desktops. But three stipulations come up.

ONE: The iPhone is still using EDGE for browsing. So your surfing speeds are going to be horrendous. This could be further evidence of 3G coming soon. I personally use a CENTRO with Sprint for tethering my iBook and its the coolest thing since sliced bread. Our recent trip to Myrtle Beach was that much more fun with the laptop plugging away on a four hour trip. :-)

TWO: The iPhone currently has unlimited data while browsing on the device. Not while tethering. You’re gonna have to pony up data charges while using the device as a modem. Prices haven’t been set yet for the usage but its never cheap.

THREE: For the use of this cool feature, you are going to become a loyal subscriber with ATT for the next two years. Gotcha suckers. I’m using USBModem for the CENTRO, hopefully someone comes up with a similar app.
