Video Review #28: Proporta Sheepskin Flip Style Case

Posted in Cases, Reviews by Omar C. Published March 11th, 2008

Rating: 6 out of 10
Pros: The quality of leather is pretty nice
Cons: The little side arms that hold the iPhone into place seem like a cheap solution and could possibly scratch the chrome beveled edge.
Verdict: Not my favorite Flip Case, but for $30+ it’s not a bad buy

Review – Agent18 EcoShield

Posted in Cases, Reviews by Danny Smallman. Published March 10th, 2008

This is a very cool case. Quite a few people compare it to the SwitchEasy capsule (click for review), as not only is it the same type of case, but protects the iphone in the same way. This case was designed with the environment in mind, as the packaging is made from recycled materials and the material used for the case has a minimum carbon impact. Agent18 had more high res pics than me so here they are 1 2 3 4 5 6

iPhone SDK Roadmap Round-Up

Posted in News by Danny Smallman. Published March 6th, 2008

So we got quite a bit today, heres a quick round-up.

  • push contacts,
  • global address list,
  • Cisco IPsec VPN,
  • authentication and certs,
  • enterprise class WiFi (WPA2 / 802.1x),
  • security policies,
  • enterprise configuration tools,
  • and want remote wipe
  • Microsoft Exchange – the same email app, calendar app, and contact apps that we all love will get information directly from the Exchange server. So no new apps on the iPhone for using Exchange.

SDK

  • Available today
  • Cocoa Touch – Multi-touch events, Multi-touch controls, Acceleromter, View Hierarchy, Localization, Alerts, Web View, People Picker, Image Picker, CameraMedia – Core Audio, OpenAL, Audio Mixing, Audio Recording, Video Playback, JPG, PNG, TIFF, PDS Quartz, Core Animation, Embedded OpenGLCore Services – Collections, Address Book, Networking, File access, SQLite, Core Location, Net Services Threading, Preferences, URL utilitiesCore OS – OS X Kernel, BSD TCP/IP, Sockets, Power Management, Keychain, Certificates, File System, Lib System, Security, Bonjour
  • Remote debugger runs on mac with apps runnings on the iPhone
  • Simulator runs on mac – Works perfectly according to Engadget
  • It took two days to build a photo editor. Pinch the picture for effects, shake the phone to undo.
  • 2 weeks to put a game together. a flying game where you tap the screen to shoot and use the accelerometer to steer.
  • EA games make a spore version in just 2 weeks with the SDK.
  • Salesforce.com have a monthly stats app
  • AOL made AIM for iphone, the developer had never used a mac, but it took him 5 days.
  • ePOCRATES made a drug lookup app – tap on the name of the drug it shows you a picture, dosing information etc.
  • SEGA made Super Monkey Ball – again accelerometer to move
  • All Apps distributed Via App Store in the next iphone Update – Some illegal and obvious types of apps are banned.
  • All apps download over cellular or WiFi connections, also keeps you updated with apps.
  • Devs get a 70/30 split on revenue, no cc fees hosting or anything, apple just require 30% for App store usage. Free apps are free of charge.
  • Software update 2.0 -Free of charge for iPhone, small charge for touch users Ipod Touch, Not availible until JUNE!!!!!
  • Parental control features as well, parents can turn off the App Store and Safari, probably some more things as well.

In the Q&A after this caught my attention
Q: “How likely will there be a VoIP?”
A: “We will only limit over cellular — if you want to dev them for WiFi, that’s fine.”
Thats about it, other than you have to pay to be a iPhone developer to get hold of the SDK, $99 to be precise. So there were some good things that happened as well as some bad things, what’s your views?
