Don’t have an iPhone 3G yet because you are scared of that $399 pricetag? I would be too. Why pay double the price of what everyone else is paying? Now you don’t have to. I have found a simple loophole that will allow you to instantly become eligible for the $199 or $299 subsidized price even if you are not upgrade eligible and are not an owner of a first gen iPhone. The best part is that this doesn’t take much time at all as long as you know what you are doing, and you can take care of this on the way to the Apple or AT&T store. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, learn how to take advantage of the lack of knowledge of AT&T’s Customer Service after the jump!!
First off, I hope the disclaimer didn’t scare you. I’m just making sure we can’t get into trouble by releasing this info. I don’t want Omar mad at me because the AT&T Feds come breaking down his door. As far as I know, the following is a legit method. At least that is what the AT&T rep told me on July 10. The convo was recorded also so I’m covered. Moving on….
I know many of you read about my battle with AT&T to get eligible for the subsidized pricing the day before launch. If you haven’t, take the time to read it to get some background info on this topic. So here we go. I will list what you need to say and what the customer service rep’s response will most likely be, so you are prepared. Here is what you will need to do/to have:
Steps:
I have, so far, done this twice. Once for myself and another time for my girlfriend. I used the same IMEI number to pull off this trick for both lines. The IMEI number I used is from a first gen iPhone I sold to my friend back in late May. He is still using the iPhone without any problems.
What you have to remember is, when you change your plan to the iPhone plan, don’t use any data on your current phone until you receive your new iPhone or you could incur data charges. Also, take note of how many text messages you will have and use. In other words, its best to do this right before you go pick up your new iPhone.
If you try this, good luck. Make sure to report your findings in the comments below. If you have any questions, post those also and I will attempt to answer them to the best of my knowledge. And remember……..YOU HEARD IT ON BuyMeAniPhone.com FIRST!!!
There is also another way. Omar knows my entire dramatic situation from S.A., TX opening day. I was about to do this as a last ditch effort… The method mentioned above doesn’t cost you anything, my method will run you $9.99/month. Everyone knows you are authorized up to 5 lines on your account. If you have to. Just add a new line to your account. That new line will be automatically eligible for the subsidized pricing. You’ll have your new iphone, but your monthly bill will increase by $10 for adding that line. (the $10 increase is assuming the phone you already had on your account isn’t another Iphone…)
Yea that will work if you don’t have access to an imei number but they aren’t hard to find. Can’t tell you how though. Google it and you will find the answer
that number isn’t easily obtainable via google. you have to know some one who has an iphone who doesn’t mind you using their number. Which I don’t… any suggestions besides opening another line on your service. I personally think that the 199, 299 price was false advertised, apple made it seem like regardless of your current wireless contract obligations that you could get it at that price. And now people like me who have been waiting a long time to finally get one a screwed b/c of a technicality.
There definitely is a way to find an imei number on Google or any major search engine. Unfortunately, I am not able to tell you. Just keep trying.
Yo I tried calling with the IMEI number and they were like you have to go to the store and get a new sim card and activate through itunes…no way getting around it i guess and i probably cant call back cuz i give them my info right?
Yea I posted above that they would say that. You can call back and tell them that you tried it with your old sim and it worked. You don’t need to activate it because it is already activated. Tell the rep, “All you need them to do is add the iphone plan.” Just be assertive. Just convince them that it works. Follow the guide above.
ok after you get a new iphone plan add to your account, then how you get a new iphone 3g?
Go to the AT&T store. You should be upgrade eligible thus allowing you to pay $199 or $299
ok so to be upgrade eligible you have to have and old iphone? thats all and even thu i checked my number on the att site and said not eligible till sept 2009
In order to be upgrade eligible you need one of two things….Either be a new customer or be a current iPhone owner. Basically what they mean by being a current iPhone owner is having an iPhone plan on your account at the time of purchase of your iPhone 3g. The guide above walks you through how to exploit a loophole of the latter of the two requirements.
Hi thanks for the tip. Does the IMEI # have to be the 1st generation? Will a current 3G IMEI # work?
Thanks!
I’m sure the IMEI has to be a first gen iPhone. The IMEI will tell AT&T which iPhone it is.

I was wondering say you found your IMEI number on the internet. Isn’t there a possibility that when you call that they might reject the number, b/c its invalid, bogus, the IMEI number was turned in as lost or stolen. Anybody who’s found the number other than a friend have any suggestions or have ran into this problem???
It doesnt work. I called in couple days before and they put in the IMEI number for me, and added a iPhone data plan to my account. I ran in the store next morning, and they said I am not eligible!!! And I am stuck with an iPhone plan with no iPhone.
fuck this phone and fuck this site
has any tried this lately? does it still work? please let me know asap. thank you.
What do you think about WIKILEAKS?
By the way, anybody home?!
