Citrix Brings XenApp to iPhone

Posted in Apps, News by Tom Moccia. Published November 25th, 2008

About a week ago Citrix announced that their XenApp will soon be available for the iPhone, and I am extremely fired up about this release. Citrix is a remote application that allows users to access their computer desktop remotely from another computer. The window on the remote computer displays what is on the other computer as opposed to other VNC clients that only transmit raw data. The benefits of this seem somewhat obvious, no need to worry about whether the files you need to work on are at the office, no transferring to thumb drives or emailing them to yourself. You can literally work on any file remotely from another computer.

Another added benefit is, if you are anything like myself, you work on a windows based PC at your day job but prefer a Mac at home. I have the best of both worlds; I can use Windows remotely through the Citrix client on my MacBook and of course have OS X on my Mac. All this without running Boot camp.

We all want to be more “green” and environmentally friendly and here is an Application that will save some trips back and forth to the office and a chance for more companies to become more telecommuter friendly. Be more “green” and help Mother Earth is why people will claim to use the Citrix App. I’m sure that’s what people will tell the boss even if it’s more like, telecommute to be on the “green” at the golf course.

Now lets get to how this makes iPhone users life all the better. Until Citrix officially releases the App, if I need a file from my work PC I will still need to carry my laptop all over town. Soon, “SHAZAAM!!!” if I am unsure if I may need a particular file no need for a laptop, I will be able to access my work files from my work PC through Citrix via my iPhone. Granted the practicality of creating or editing Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents seems laborious at best, but if your in a pinch and need to print out a quick letter you have already created or email a forgotten proposal to a client it will pay for itself in spades.

All the details and capabilities have not been disclosed quite yet, but imagine how cool it would be to present your PowerPoint presentation from your iPhone. This is a major step in realizing the true computing potential of the iPhone and even more is the potential for expedited innovations from current and potential App developers.

Maybe the Mactablet is already here and just called the iPhone.
