A friend of mine has just started his own software development company. He is aiming to create free software across windows, Linux, Mac OSX and the iPhone/iPod Touch. Development will start at the beginning of next year, and since I am helping do some beta testing for them, I’ll be able to get some exclusive hands on stuff before any of the apps hit the app store. Keep an eye out for more on this coming early 2009.

Pros: Comes with lots of extras, and has a built-in laser pointer, and a bright led flashlight
Cons: It’s a bit awkward to use your iPhone while the battery is attached
Verdict: The Richard Solo 1800 Backup Battery is the quintessential accessory for all iPhone/iPod owners. It’s perfect for people who are always on the go and if you don’t already own one, you need to order yours today. We’re giving this product the Editors’ Choice award.

About a week ago Citrix announced that their XenApp will soon be available for the iPhone, and I am extremely fired up about this release. Citrix is a remote application that allows users to access their computer desktop remotely from another computer. The window on the remote computer displays what is on the other computer as opposed to other VNC clients that only transmit raw data. The benefits of this seem somewhat obvious, no need to worry about whether the files you need to work on are at the office, no transferring to thumb drives or emailing them to yourself. You can literally work on any file remotely from another computer.
Another added benefit is, if you are anything like myself, you work on a windows based PC at your day job but prefer a Mac at home. I have the best of both worlds; I can use Windows remotely through the Citrix client on my MacBook and of course have OS X on my Mac. All this without running Boot camp.
My final review of Speck products comes in the form of the Speck ToughSkin. The case is designed to provide the ultimate protection for the iPhone 3G. This case in my opinion is somewhere between the protection offered by The Otterbox Defender and the PixelSkin I previously reviewed. Click on after the break to read the review.

Pros: Charges your iPhone while in use
Cons: The SmartScan feature doesn’t always find the clearest station
Verdict: This is a nice FM transmitter with helpful features, but I’ve tested FM transmitters before that were cheaper with less features that had better audio quality.

Pros: Uses a snap button enclosure which will satisfy those that hate velcro enclosures and those that are paranoid of magnetic enclosures.
Cons: This case doesn’t fit the iPhone very snug and the screen doesn’t line up with the cutout
Verdict: At $53, this case is over priced and not very functional.
You can purchase this product directly from Proporta starting at $52.99.
In record time the Dev Team has released the new QuickPwn for the 2.2 iPhone update that was just released Friday. QuickPwn is a program that allows you to jailbreak your iPhone in order to install 3rd party apps that will never make it to the App Store. Keep in mind, jailbreaking your iPhone voids your warranty. Happy Hacking!

Pros: Built in microphone with music and call control like the Apple headset
Cons: $50 might be a bit pricey for what you’re getting, sound quality is average.
Verdict: This headset is a good replacement for the Apple headsets that come with your iPhone, but the sound quality isn’t going to be much better.
You can purchase this product directly from Ultimate Buds starting at $49.99.
