1 Billion Apps, Holy @#$%^!!!

Posted in Apps, News by Tom Moccia. Published April 24th, 2009

picture-23As I was driving home from work today I received an alert on my iPhone that the Apple App Store had reached 1 billion downloads in a mere 9 months. So for the rest of the ride home I tried to comprehend what exactly constituted a billion. We hear about a billion virtually everyday, every government bailout is in the billions but we are really kind of numb to that. Let’s really put this into perspective: 1 billion seconds ago it was 1959 and to travel 1 billion miles you would have to circle the globe 40,000 times.

For Apple customers to download 1 billion apps in the last 9 months we needed to download approximately 3.7 million apps a day or 42 Apps every second and if the average app cost 50 cents that would have generated $500 million. I can’t imagine anyone in Cupertino would have thought that the App Store would have been such a huge success. With that being said I congratulate Apple and it’s customers on 1 billion downloads. Now I will start attempting to figure out how I am going to visualize a ten billion, which Apple should hit in about 7 years.

Rating: 9 out of 10
Pros: It’s very slim and doesn’t take up much space on your visor
Cons: The volume and hang-up buttons are difficult to distinguish
Overall: This is one of the nicest Bluetooth speaker systems that I’ve used with my iPhone. I love the slim form factor and the long battery life. If you don’t like holding the phone to your ear while driving, or like to use bluetooth headsets, then this is the perfect product for you. I think that Contour has done such a good job with this product, that I’m going to award them the Editors’ Choice Award.

You can buy this product directly from Contour for $99.95

Rating: 3 out of 10
Pros: cheap, soft
Cons: very unpleasant in ears, they tend to fall off and stay in your ear when the headphone is no longer in it, they do not amplify music or enhance the bass
Overall: Not really worth checking out, iBuds was completely disappointing but we can’t expect much from a $3 product.

App Review: Field Goal Frenzy by Skyworks

Rating: 8 out of 10
Pros: Gives you your football fix, realistic feel to kicking field goals from 3 different angles and various yardages, balls even bounce off the posts instead of just missing wide or short. Local and Global high scores.
Cons: Subsequent levels could have been developed further: right now you go from short field goals and get deeper as you progress.  Another level with random distances would give the game another dimension and yet another level with defenders would give me the ultimate desire to reach the upper echelon of the game play.
Overall: Another great game from Skyworks that gives you the feel that you are on the field kicking field goals for your favorite team.  High quality graphics, local and global High Score boards make this and virtually every game Skyworks develops a winner.  The price is also right at $1.99.

Click here to purchase Field Goal Frenzy from the App Store.
