Nine Inch Nails released an iPhone application in April that allows fans to keep track of the bands updates, blogs, tour info and such. Well in the normal update process that all applications have, the NIN was rejected by Apple. The reason: “Objectionable content” in the form of the album “The Downward Spiral”. A user through the program would have access to certain explicit lyrics that Apple does not approve of. Needless to say Trent Reznor, founder of Nine Inche Nails, wasn’t pleased.
Reznor claimed that Apple is being a tad hypocritical with it’s policies stating the following:
Now, “The Downward Spiral” the album is not available anywhere in the iPhone app. The song “The Downward Spiral” I believe is in a podcast that can be streamed to the app. Thanks Apple for the clear description of the problem – as in, what do you want us to change to get past your stupid ******* standards?
….
You can buy The Downward ******* Spiral on iTunes, but you can’t allow an iPhone app that may have a song with a bad word somewhere in it. Geez, what if someone in the forum in our app says **** or ****? I suppose that also falls into indecent material. Hey Apple, I just got some SPAM about ***** THROUGH YOUR MAIL PROGRAM. I just saw ***** right there in Safari! On my iPhone!
He did however say that he will continue to use Apple products and the iPhone because they are much better than the competition. He just wanted to draw attention to the approval process and it’s flaws. Also if the application isn’t approved, NIN is looking at releasing the application to jailbroken devices.
hmm… pretty interesting… apple is weird with what they allow and what they dont
Big flaw the should look at each situation.
Apple can be weird sometimes, they let an app where you have to stop a baby from crying by shaking the iphone, and they want let this app pass.
I think its funny how apple folded under pressure and allowed this eventually.
