But in all fairness, the Android-phones were the first phones with a digital compass! Personally I expect augmented reality to be the thing of the future on mobile phones. That is where the compass is really useful for. Just Google for "Layar Android" and you see what I mean. Will not take long before we see apps like these for the 3GS!
