Temple Run 2 App Review

In April of 2011, Developer Imangi™ Studios released the widely successful game, Temple Run. Since then, millions of iOS users have been able to feel like Indiana Jones, running through a ruin temple avoiding the consequences of taking a tiny idol, protected by demon monkeys.

Last month, the North Carolina based firm released a sequel, creatively named Temple Run 2. The game, while preserving the addictive, challenging nature of the original, adds several new features and elements to spice up the experience and make its predecessor look like child’s play.

The first thing you’ll notice right off the bat with the new version is the graphics. Especially on the iPhone 5’s display, the colors are brilliant and the frame rate of the game itself is much higher. Where three evil monkeys would chase our hero through the lush jungle in the original, they have been replaced in the sequel with one large, scary monkey.

Another great addition to the game is the use of instant power-ups. By simply double-tapping the screen, the player can activate the dash, coin magnet, coin bonus, score bonus, gem bonus, and shield (more on those in a second.)

The game features two new running mechanics- zip lines, and mine cars. Zip lines offer a welcome break for the player, allowing you to hop on and go for a ride to collect some coins, whereas the mine car sections are challenging hit-or-miss sections that will leave you frantically tilting your device to and fro.

In the new iteration, resurrection wings are a thing of the past. Now, players can collect gems to use on various upgrades, as well as reviving the character if he succumbs to one of the many pitfalls around the levels.

All in all, Temple Run 2 is a serious upgrade to the previous iteration. Beautifully rendered graphics and refreshing, fluid, and addictive game-play make this my game of 2013. So far…
